The Brief
A fully bound 500 page reference book, with full colour cover and colour plates, which featured the historic parks and gardens of Herefordshire. Each description was to include archive images, and a map giving grid references.

Process The project was mainly in three parts:- First, a logo design for the project identity. Second, a full colour cover design. Third, a main format for each page presentation, and the prefix pages were also designed with a distinct style. Other than the dust cover and colour plates, the main book was printed in one colour - black. Thus, to avoid a general starkness of print and to give pleasant reading, we set the text in "Classical Garamond". Each main page was given a consistent style, with a grey horizontal bar carrying the header text of each of the various gardens. The grid refences and parish locations were also set in a consistent style below the title bars.
Line illustrations were positioned either inside the text blocks, or set below the content text. Where open spaces between each garden entry were too apparent, small "bosses" were positioned in the centre of the white space.
